POWA Screening Slots (Updated 2021!)

Slice of Life, Romance & Arthouse
The old “Chillout” slot has been redefined for the New Year – replacing it is the new “Slice Of Life, Romance & Arthouse” slot. While this might not seem like a large change at first, in truth, it might be a large one. Opening up “Romance” will allow more dramatic romantic series to exist in our lineup, and while “Slice of Life” series are usually very chill, they are not universally so. “Arthouse” series are best defined by series that are in some way artistic or experimental, rather than just merely entertaining. Previously screened examples.

Sci-Fi
A series that focuses heavily on “Science Fiction” settings and themes, this covers a wide variety of genres however sci-fi must be the main focus. “Sci-Fi” will alternate with the “Fantasy” slot after we’ve finished a series of the alternating genre. Previously screened examples.

Fantasy
We are looking for a fantasy series, so knights, dragons, magic, damsels in distress or just about anything else that’s not in a normal setting and isn’t “Sci-Fi”. “Fantasy” will alternate with the “Sci-Fi” slot after we’ve finished a series of the alternating genre. Previously screened examples.

Comedy
We are looking for a series which the main emphasis is on humour,  designed to make the audience laugh through amusement and most often work by exaggerating characteristics for humorous effect. Previously screened examples.

Drama
We are looking for a series that relies on the emotional and relational development of realistic characters. While Drama film relies heavily on this kind of development, dramatic themes play a large role in the plot as well. “Drama” will alternate with the “Cultural & Historical” slot after we’ve finished a series of the alternating genre. Previously screened examples.

Cultural & Historical
“Cultural and Historical” series will draw significant influence from time periods, or aspects of time periods, that are not strictly considered “Modern” as well as series that draw influence from folklore, mythological figures, and/or aspects of cultures that would appear foreign to us. “Cultural & Historical” will alternate with the “Drama” slot after we’ve finished a series of the alternating genre. Previously screened examples.

Mature, Horror & Thriller
“Mature” is being reworked slightly to include the extra descriptors of “Horror & Thriller”. Horror and Thriller genres are about edge-of-your-seat tension, although the eventual climax of the tension generally comes from and results in different emotions. Deepening mysteries, thickening atmosphere, rising action and higher stakes – these are things that would be at hope in the “Mature, Horror and Thriller” genre slot. Previously screened examples.

Action
We are looking for a series in which the protagonist or protagonists are thrust into a series of challenges that typically include violence, extended fighting, physical feats, and frantic chases. “Action” will alternate with the “Sports & Games” slot after we’ve finished a series of the alternating genre. Previously screened examples.

Sports & Games (Updated 2021!)
“Sports & Games” genre shows will focus on one or more skill based activity – Whether physical, mental or technological – and often will focus on the culture and/or personalities that come as a part of that activity. Wherever its Tennis, Running, Chess, Mahjong, eSports, Board Games or Street Racing, it’ll fit under the genre of Sports & Games. “Sports & Games” will alternate with the “Action” slot after we’ve finished a series of the alternating genre. Previously screened examples.
