Important Announcement Regarding POWA’s Future

It was recently brought to POWA’s attention that the ECU eSports Society will no longer be allowed to book rooms at ECU for us. This decree has from the Student Guild itself, who feel they can no longer justify letting POWA use their services while being unaffiliated with them. For those who do not know, since losing Guild affiliation in early 2020, POWA has relied on the eSports Society to book all ECU rooms for us, for which we continue to offer sincere thanks.

With this being cut off, all currently planned POWA events at ECU Joondalup are cancelled immediately. This includes our upcoming weekly screening on Sunday, April 18. As such, POWA will once again be going on hiatus.

As the Student Guild has stated their unwillingness to assist us further in attaining the criteria needed for re-affiliation, we are also disappointed to announce the end of our relationship with ECU after over a decade. Events may still be run at the campus, but not in any regular capacity for the foreseeable future.

The Committee was always aware of this possibility, and through the help of the wonderful POWA community have become vastly more prepared for this than we were during our 2020 hiatus. The Committee are currently exploring a few solid avenues that may be able to get us up and running as early as May.

In addition, POWA has a number of online events ready to go as a way to tide everyone over, including improved online screenings and gaming events. We are sorry to ask for your patience and support for the second year in a row, but just like last time, these are the things that can keep this community going.

To keep up with online POWA events, the best place to go would be our community Discord server.

If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact us through the Discord, our Facebook, our website, or our email.

POWA Returns! 17th January 2021

Location: ECU Joondalup, Room 7.101

POWA’s back from our Holiday break for a jam-packed Come to POWA Early Screening!

We’ll be opening up early to welcome you all back with the tried and true tradition of Super Smash Bros… Now with extra helpings of Sephiroth thrown into the fray. The Nintendo Switch will be open for other games and, as always, everyone should, of course, feel welcome in bringing some board games to play too.

At 3PM, we’ll return right back to where we left off with our regular weekly screenings. This means that ‘Ascendance of a Bookworm’, ‘Yona of the Dawn’ and ‘Psycho-Pass’ will all be having their first votes to decide if they stay in our line-up.
Much more importantly, we are starting the New Year off with TWO new shows. A new “Comedy” and “Action” series will be voted on by members. Nominations are still open for these slots, so be sure to check out our Facebook Group to suggest series that fit these slots.

Entry for our weekly screenings is $3 for members and $4 for guests. However, your first time is free! We will be at Room 7.101, ECU Joondalup. The doors open at 12:00PM for the Come to POWA Early event, but our regular screening will start at 3:00PM, leaving time for you to get settled and buy drinks and snacks.

This Week’s Schedule:
12:00PM-2:30PM – Come to POWA Early – Smash Bros. & Board Games
3:00PM – Ascendance of a Bookworm – Episode 4 (Voting, Fantasy)

POWA Constitution Updates for the Upcoming AGM

As announced at recent screenings, the POWA Committee is looking to change some sections of our constitution in order to make the establishment of new Committees more flexible. We presented version 4.0 to the community and have received enough feedback to create a final version 4.1 that will be going up for a vote in the upcoming AGM on November 15th.

Here are the changes we have made between v4.0 and v4.1 based on community feedback:

  • Section 5.IV
    • – v4.0: “During the election, as many Committee Member positions will be filled as possible, with a minimum of two (2) and a maximum of five (5) being necessary for the club to function.”
    • – v4.1: ” During the election, a minimum of two (2) and a maximum of five (5) Committee positions are to be filled.
      i. In the event of a Committee with less than 5 filled positions, the duties of the unfilled positions shall be shared between Committee Members in a manner agreeable to them.
ii. The Committee Member voting process is to be outlined in a separate document, known as “POWA Committee Election Regulations”. This document should be maintained to give all POWA members the opportunity to select preferable nominees while voting.” *
  • Section 11.I
    • – v4.0: “No alteration, addition or amendment of this constitution shall be made unless and until earned by a motion at an Annual General Meeting of POWA.”
    • – v4.1: “No alteration, addition or amendment of this constitution shall be made until earned by a motion at a Special General Meeting of POWA, with at least two (2) weeks’ notice given to all members.”

*The “POWA Committee Election Regulations” Document is a newly created document that comes at the suggestion of the community to make the proposed updates to the Constitution be consistent with every Committee election going forward. It will be included in the vote for the Constitution changes at the AGM.
The POWA Committee Election Regulations can be found here.

For additional reference:
POWA Constitution v3.6 (Oct 2017) – The club’s current Constitution.
POWA Constitution v4.0 (Oct 2020) – The first draft of a proposed update by the Committee, with changes from v3.6 highlighted.
POWA Constitution v4.1 (Nov 2020) – An updated proposal based on community feedback that will be brought to the AGM for voting. Changes from both v3.6 and v4.0 are highlighted.

You must attend the AGM to vote for or against the proposed changes to the Constitution. You must have an active POWA membership to attend the AGM, but be aware that it can be purchased from the front desk before the Meeting starts.
There will be minimal time to go over the proposed Constitution changes during the AGM, so please be sure to read and understand the changes before then.
