POWA GM & Spring Seasonal Preview, 2nd May 2021

As POWA is still on hiatus, we continue with our online events. Be sure to join our Discord to learn more.

From our Discord, we will be having our Second Quarterly General Meeting, and a very important one at that. The committee will discuss with the community the situation which brought about our break from the ECU Student Guild and concrete plans for our meeting location going forward.

While we’re unsure how long the GM will last, we’ll fill the rest of the evening with a look at the first episodes of some anime currently airing in the spring season! Look at the schedule below for what we’ll be watching and when we’ll be watching it. If the GM goes longer than an hour, shows may have to be cut.

Maquia – Online Movie Screening, 25th April 2021

While POWA takes a break from meeting in person (see here for more details), we’re hoping to tide the community over with some fun online events! First up is a screening of the 2018 movie, ‘Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms’ by Mari Okada in her directorial debut.

Movie Synopsis:
“The people of Iolph have a lifespan of hundreds of years and maintain their teenage appearances for life, but when the peace of this town is shattered by those who want the secret to their longevity for themselves, a young girl named Maquia is forced to escape. Wandering the land alone, upon finding an orphaned baby she chooses to raise him, but as this boy grows up so the difference in their lifespans is thrown into ever-sharper relief.”

To join in on the event, you’ll need to join our Discord server.
From there, we’ll post a link to a Watch party set up on Kosmi which will allow everyone to sync to the screening through AnimeLab. You won’t need any preparation before this, but feel free to create a Kosmi account beforehand if you want.

The movie will start at 4PM.

If you have any questions please feel free to ask the Committee on any of POWA’s social media platforms. Next week, we’ll be having an online GM to update the community on our current hiatus and our plans going forward.

The Facebook event can be found here.

We hope to see you there!

Important Announcement Regarding POWA’s Future

It was recently brought to POWA’s attention that the ECU eSports Society will no longer be allowed to book rooms at ECU for us. This decree has from the Student Guild itself, who feel they can no longer justify letting POWA use their services while being unaffiliated with them. For those who do not know, since losing Guild affiliation in early 2020, POWA has relied on the eSports Society to book all ECU rooms for us, for which we continue to offer sincere thanks.

With this being cut off, all currently planned POWA events at ECU Joondalup are cancelled immediately. This includes our upcoming weekly screening on Sunday, April 18. As such, POWA will once again be going on hiatus.

As the Student Guild has stated their unwillingness to assist us further in attaining the criteria needed for re-affiliation, we are also disappointed to announce the end of our relationship with ECU after over a decade. Events may still be run at the campus, but not in any regular capacity for the foreseeable future.

The Committee was always aware of this possibility, and through the help of the wonderful POWA community have become vastly more prepared for this than we were during our 2020 hiatus. The Committee are currently exploring a few solid avenues that may be able to get us up and running as early as May.

In addition, POWA has a number of online events ready to go as a way to tide everyone over, including improved online screenings and gaming events. We are sorry to ask for your patience and support for the second year in a row, but just like last time, these are the things that can keep this community going.

To keep up with online POWA events, the best place to go would be our community Discord server.

If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact us through the Discord, our Facebook, our website, or our email.
